Splitting a bill without the awkward maths
The calculation itself is simple — bill × tip% — but doing it at the table with several people and an uneven bill is where it gets fiddly. Enter the total, pick a percentage, and set how many people are splitting it.
What percentage is normal?
Tipping norms vary enormously and there is no universal answer:
- United States — 15–20% is standard for table service, more for exceptional service or large groups.
- United Kingdom and much of Europe — 10% is common, and often already added as a service charge.
- Japan and South Korea — tipping is not customary and can be refused.
Check the bill before adding anything. A line labelled service charge or gratuity means the tip is already included.
Pre-tax or post-tax?
Conventionally the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax isn't part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total because it's easier, and the difference is usually under a dollar. Either is fine.
The round-up option
Splitting a bill rarely produces clean numbers. Switching on round-up takes each person's share to the next whole amount, which makes settling up with cash much simpler — and quietly nudges the tip up a little.
