Credit hours are the weighting: a 4-credit course moves your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit one.
How a weighted GPA works
Grade point average converts letter grades to points, weights each by the credit hours of the course, and averages the result:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours
Quality points for a course are its grade value multiplied by its credit hours. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course is 12 quality points; a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course is 12 as well — the same contribution from different grades.

Some institutions award 4.3 for an A+, and some cap it at 4.0. Check your registrar's published scale before relying on a total.
Weighted versus unweighted
An unweighted GPA treats every course the same. A weighted GPA — the one calculated here — accounts for credit hours, so heavier courses move the average more. Separately, many US high schools use "weighted" to mean bonus points for honours or AP courses, which pushes the maximum above 4.0. Those are two different meanings of the same word.
Raising a GPA
The arithmetic gets less forgiving as credits accumulate. Ten credits of B work can be pulled up quickly; eighty credits of it barely moves. Concentrate effort on high-credit courses, and check whether your institution allows grade replacement for retaken courses — it's usually the fastest available lever.
